FIBC Bulk Bag Glossary

Each industry has its own language, and knowing what people call you can help you determine your options and connect with your customers. Please check the  following common terms relating to FIBC Bulk bags.

Baffle panel - pieces of fabric into the four corners of a tubular bag or U-panel bags or four-panel bag, which can help to improve the bag's square shape and appearance, improve the stability of your packaging, and use storage space more efficiently.

Bag Height - Flexible dimensions of container bag height measured from bottom sewing seam to top sewing seam.

Body Fabric - The fabric used for body of FIBC bulk bags with styles of  U- panels, four panels, and tubular shape.

Bottom spout - also known as discharge spout, which is used as an outlet to drain the contents of the FIBC.

Breathable fabric - Fabric without coating or lamination.

Coated or laminated fabric - Polypropylene (PP) coated fabric to prevent moisture ingress or for sieving the contents. Also known as airtight or laminated fabric.

Discharge Spout - also known as bottom spout, is used as output to unload the FIBC content.

Document Bag - Usually made of polyethylene or polypropylene, commonly used to store shipping documents and ID cards. Also called a pocket or envelope.

Cord Closure - A beak structure similar to a petal closure, but with cords that follow a closed circumference.

Duffle Top - A FIBC similar to a sports bag, with an inlet that extends from the top seam and follows the dimensions of the bag bottom.

Fabric Weight - A unit of measurement for fabric weight, expressed in ounces per square meter or grams per square meter. A typical standard weight is 6.5 ounces (180grams) per square meter..

FIBC: Short for Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container

Filling spout - also known as inlet spout or top spout, which used as an inlet to fill into the FIBC.

Filler cord - a polypropylene material commonly used in the manufacture of anti-sieve bulk bags. Rope sewn into seams or cords, such as braided yarn, to prevent the escape of fine dust and debris.

Safe Workload- SWL is the amount of cargo (pounds or kilograms) designed for a bag to be transported. Note: Most customers use the metric system. One ton is equal to 2205 pounds or 1000 kilograms.

Safety Factor - Also known as Service Factor, is an industry standard that requires flexible containers to handle 5 to 6 times the safety workload (SWL) and is typically expressed as a ratio of "5: 1 or 6 : 1 SF".

Sift Resistant Structure - Flexible container bag function prevents product sieving when very thin material is packed in the bag. Also called “anti-tracking” structure. Usually uses coated fabric and filler cord in the sewing thread.

Single Trip Bag - FIBC bulk bags designed in accordance with ISO 21898.

Tube shape Liner - This is a straight cylinder, with or without heat sealing at one end. This low-cost liner can be loosely attached to a soft plastic bag, or the tag can be glued or sewn. Also known as a tubular liner.

UV Stabilization - The function of FIBC fabric to prevent long-term exposure to the sun's degraded UV rays. To ensure this protection, additives are added to the resin before the wire is extruded.

Volume - The size or amount of material the FIBC can hold. It is usually measured in cubic meters.
